Natalma, the broodmare which was bred to Nearctic and produced Northern Dancer, influencing the development of thoroughbred breeding world-wide, and Jack McNiven, one of the leading breeders of standardbreds in Canada, are among the 15 nominations for this year’s election to the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame. The results will be announced May 22.

It was a weekend for horse enthusiasts and professionals, January 12-15, at the Capri Centre in Red Deer, Alberta, with 825 people on hand to take in the 25th anniversary Horse Breeders and Owners Conference. Sixteen speakers from all over North America and one from Holland, came to engage attendees on a diverse range of topics, and 60 equine-related businesses/organizations, who sponsored the event, were available to display and discuss their products and services. Alberta Stable Initiative:
The Alberta Stable Owners Seminar held at the Capri Centre, Red Deer on January 12th 2007, attracted over 300 stable owners and enthusiasts. The participants learned about the value of contracts and agreements for reducing risk from Ester Schwabb of Edmonton. The panel discussion with four of Alberta’s leading stable owners discussing obtaining and retaining clients was the highlight of the afternoon. Linda Connors of Gallop on Stables in Syracuse, New York discussed effective marketing techniques for stables. Body condition scoring is a method of evaluating body fat in relationship to body musculature. The system developed by Dr. Don Henneke assigns a numerical value from 1 to 9 based on the deposition of fat on horses in the areas of the loin, ribs, tailhead, withers, neck and shoulders (see Figure 1 and Table 1).
